Hybrid Lecture: Language Culture “in motion” (in German)

About Hybrid Lecture: Language Culture “in motion” (in German)

How do new words like “matchen”, “woke” or “Zeitenwende” enter the Duden? Who decides what is “correct”? Dr. Kathrin Kunkel-Razum, former editor-in-chief of the Duden, offers insights into the history and present of Germany’s most influential dictionary. Lecture in German.

Since its first edition in 1880 with just 187 pages, the Duden has grown into a reference work with 151,000 entries in its 29th edition. Around 3,000 new words were added most recently. This evening offers a fresh look at the cultural history of the Duden and how dictionaries reflect social debates. Dr. Kathrin Kunkel-Razum, who headed the Duden editorial team for many years, explains how words are selected, discussed, and included – and why language always mirrors political and cultural change. The lecture will be held in German.
