This September, Pictoplasma—Berlin’s world-leading character design conference—returns to New York for its 11th Pictoplasma NYC edition, bringing together a global community of artists, designers, illustrators, and storytellers. Over two days, the event offers a unique opportunity to explore how character creation is evolving in response to generative image technologies, shifting aesthetic norms, and new forms of visual communication. With a program that is both critically engaged and creatively energizing, Pictoplasma NYC blends reflection and celebration—offering fresh perspectives, artistic inspiration, and meaningful connections across disciplines. Learn more about Danny Casale

New York based artist Danny Casale aka Coolman Coffeedan gained popularity through his surreal, humorous and crudely-drawn animations. The self-titled 'Bad Animator' first went viral in June 2017 with his cartoon 'Snakes Have Legs.‘ Danny continued creating animations in his unique style, which have gone on to reach hundreds of millions people around the world… making them laugh, cry, and think. In a social media world with so much negativity, Danny realized his goal of brightening up people’s timelines. Expanding on his universe, Danny has exhibited his throughout the US and Asia, most recently with shows in Shanghai, Hong Kong and Seoul.

Fran Meneses aka frannerd is an illustrator, author and creator from Santiago, Chile, currently based in New York, known for her online comics depicting the ins and outs of freelancing and mental health. Her work has been featured in Forbes, Huffington Post, Oh Comely Magazine, Flow Magazine, and DPI Magazine in Taiwan among others. Fran hosts numerous workshops and talks—and shares her life and struggles as an artist in New York on a weekly basis with her 300k YouTube followers. She's currently working on 'The Book of Agnes,' a YA graphic novel series (FirstSecond Books, Spring 2028).

Isolina Minjeong lives and works in Brooklyn. In her ceramic work, she questions cultural narratives of tradition by intricately weaving together ancient motifs and her expansive world of characters. She juxtaposes the lineages of pre-Columbian and Korean stone carving with manga imagery, lore, and mythical creatures found in Incan temples. Her figures, shameless in scale and response, honor her familial heritage while simultaneously deconstructing and redefining cultural paradigms through craft. Her work has been exhibited at NADA Miami (2023), the Spring/Break Art Show (2022), and the Tchotchke Gallery (2022), among others.

Jon Burgerman is a New York-based British artist whose works have been acquired by prestigious public collections such as London's Victoria and Albert Museum and the OÖ-Kultur Museum in Linz, Austria. His highly distinctive fuzzy-edged characters epitomise the paradoxes of contemporary life. Their seemingly simple googly eyes betray a range of emotional complexities and anxieties, with comically distressed expressions and collapsing forms. Jon also works commercially for international brands and media including ZEIT Magazin, Crocs, Casetify or Pop Mart, conceives large scale installations for luxury malls in Asia and has collaborated with Greenpeace, Linkin Park or Sesame Street. In recent years he has exhibited at WOAW Gallery (Hong Kong), Chengdu Times Art Museum (China), MISA Art fair Berlin and Cologne, Ojiri Gallery (London), L21 Gallery (Spain), Dopeness Art Lab (Taipei) and Jane Lombard Gallery (New York).

Multi-talented Lauren Martin is an illustrator and lifelong New Yorker whose artwork is inspired by the humor and joy that can be found in day-to-day life. Best known for her signature anthropomorphic characters, Lauren’s illustrations bring life to clothing, merchandise, ad campaigns, and the pages of leading newspapers and magazines. Her successful ongoing collaboration with Uniqlo has brought her designs to stores across the United States. Last year’s edition of City Parks SummerStage saw Lauren’s posters plastered around her hometown—from the subway to Times Square. And hawk-eyed readers will notice her work in the New York Times, Washington Post, New York Magazine, and more. Prior to her career in illustration, she Lauren toured the world playing keyboard in the indie rock band Frankie Cosmos.

Julian Glander is an artist, illustrator and animator who has never stopped short of pursuing his distinctive vision. He is perhaps best known for the cult video game Art Sqool, but he’s also laid down a lot of short work as a director, working for the likes of Disney, Adult Swim and the Cartoon Network. His first venture into feature-length film “Boys Go To Jupiter” recently premiered at Tribeca Film Festival.

Laser Days is a real-time rendering, worldbuilding studio co-founded by Jack Wedge and Will Freudenheim. Creating characters, worlds and stories using game engines and animation, the studio’s multifaceted work spans many different storytelling mediums, ranging from narrative short films and commercials to music videos and live performances. Laser Days have designed live animated performances for the Long Beach Opera, Dripping Music Festival, as well as a hybrid animated puppet show in collaboration with Poncili Creación and Pioneer Works. A three minute animated film, commissioned by Whatsapp and the Mercedes F1 racing team, was projected onto the Empire State Building. Based in NYC, Laser Days are represented by Hornet for commercial projects.
