Thom Niessink is a talented designer based in Amsterdam, known for his exceptional autodidactic lettering skills. His bold and joyful compositions echo classic styles and genres of lettering.

With the emergence of spring that brings colour and sunshine into our lives, our next speaker could not be a better fit. Thom Niessink is known for his excellent lettering skill, that he autodidactically acquired next to his education as a graphic designer. Next to an online portfolio and instagram, he publishes his work in a colourful zine called Some Of My Work, printed on newsprint paper. While his design process is mainly digital, letterspace is happy to be back at Grafisch Werkplaats Amsterdam, where a lot of the history, that Thom is inspired by can be seen and hands-on experienced. – Thom Niessink is a Dutch graphic designer focused on lettering, typedesign and illustration. After graduating from Mediacollege Amsterdam in 2013 he worked as a graphic designer at various companies and agencies. Throughout his career he developed a true passion for typography and custom lettering. Influenced by other typedesigners and lettering artists he sharpened his skills and found his own style. He is inspired by vintage magazines, signs and postcards from the 50’s and 60’s. Despite the vintage inspiration, his way of working is almost completely digital, using the iPad as a digital sketchbook. Combining retro and contemporary letterforms with subtle paper textures and color pallets he creates an appealing composition with a consistent typographic rhythm. — In his lettering lecture Thom will showcase his way of drawing letters and experimenting with the compositions. He will highlight key elements of the design choices and how to combine individual styles with client demands to create an appealing typographic visual. By presenting the creative process of some personal and client projects he will deep dive into the steps from first sketches to final artwork.
