Animating the Impossible
How best do we achieve smooth UI animations when dealing with DOM changes, responsive layouts, dynamic content and user interaction? Well... we start off by flipping our whole approach upside down. In this session we’ll lift the magicians curtain, take a look at some ‘impossible’ animation challenges, and learn how to approach them using a rather exciting animation technique.

Learn more about Rémi Parmentier

Rémi Parmentier is a French front-end developer working at his own small web development agency, Tilt Studio. He loves to learn, and enjoys even more to teach

Rémi Parmentier speaks about Think Like An Email Geek

Think Like An Email Geek
Coding HTML emails is a beast of its own, often perceived as relying solely on outdated practices. And for a good reason, email client quirks can make even the most clever front-end developer crazy. Emails are still part of your user's journey, from commercial newsletters to transactional emails. The first step to thinking like an email geek is to understand how email clients change our code and why this happens. From technical and security constraints to user experience enhancements, every quirk is there for a reason. Those constraints then allow email geeks to invent new ways to use HTML and CSS. From building responsive layouts without media queries to creating interactive emails without any JavaScript—"Life finds a way" to quote my favorite mathematician.

Designing For Complex UI, with Vitaly Friedman

Not much can surprise us when it comes to interface challenges. We can design a decent card, a well-rounded accordion, an accessible modal and an exquisite hamburger navigation. But what if there are slightly more complex UX challenges ahead of us? Well, complex UI doesn’t have to be complicated. In this online workshop with Vitaly Friedman, UX consultant and creative lead behind Smashing Magazine, we’ll dive deep into dissecting how to solve complex design problems. Whether you’re working on a complex nested multi-level navigation or creating enterprise grade tables, this workshop will give you the tools you need to excel at your work.

In this hands-on workshop, you’ll learn how to craft delightful animations using SVG, CSS and GSAP, and have a ton of fun whilst doing it. Cassie will cover both impact and implementation. Making sure the animations add the value as intended, as well as covering the development skills needed. That way you can confidently put your new SVG animation skills in practice after the workshop!
New Front-End Adventures, 2022 Edition, with Vitaly Friedman
Microsoft Technology Center (Microsoft NYC)11 Times Square, 5th & 6th Floor,New York
With HTTP/3, Service Workers, Jamstack, PWA, TypeScript, Web Assembly, AVIF, Variable Fonts, CSS Container Queries and clamp(), Client Hints and Resource Hints, CSS Subgrid and SVG2, we all are still trying to figure out just the right strategy for building websites and apps efficiently. We want to use all of these technologies and smart processes, but how can we use them efficiently, and how do we achieve it within a reasonable amount of time? In this workshop, Vitaly Friedman, co-founder of Smashing Magazine and front-end/UX consultant, will be looking into the state of front-end in 2022, with new challenges and new opportunities, and how we can utilize all of those wonderful shiny web technologies we have available today. What’s the best way to compress text, optimize images, deliver and contain third-party scripts, conduct A/B testing, manage web fonts, build layouts, streamline delivery of CSS/JS, serve static assets and architect a flexible and maintainable design system? And where would we even start refactoring and re-organizing our legacy code base, or move to ES Modules in production, or use Web workers or Webassembly? Oh my, in the workshop, we’ll cover it all.
